South Sydney Rabbitohs fans are buzzing with excitement following reports that Jack Wighton has been eyeing properties in Sans Souci, close to where his close friend Latrell Mitchell lives. It is believed that the Raiders star has been pondering a move to the Rabbitohs next year. However, Wighton’s agent Matt Rose dismissed the rumours, stating that his client has also been checking out the property market in Brisbane. Wighton, who already owns two properties in Canberra and a farm in country NSW, has been smart with his earnings and investments.
The NRL has been warned that more rugby union clubs are raiding on rugby league stars. The recent acquisition of Joseph Suaalii on a $5 million contract has raised concerns that union teams are now targeting the likes of Payne Haas, Tolutau Koula, and Will Penisini. Clint Newton, CEO of the Rugby League Players’ Association, has stated that placing further restrictions on player movement could cause more problems and make union a more attractive option for off-contract stars. Newton believes that the NRL should negotiate and announce an improved CBA for players to deter them from seeking opportunities elsewhere.
The NRL plans to introduce a transfer window to prevent players from signing with other clubs a year in advance. However, Newton argues that the current November 1 transfer system is working well and increasing restrictions on players’ freedom would only make the situation worse. He believes that the free agency window has played a crucial role in the competitive tension and excitement of the season so far. Further restrictions would only leave struggling clubs with limited options for recruitment and worsen their already strained opportunities.
