Since taking on the role, Slater has successfully led Queensland to victories in his initial two State of Origin series. He’s now aiming to clinch a potential third win in the coming year.
Despite not having witnessed three consecutive series wins since 2017, the Maroons are hoping for the best. Many were apprehensive that Slater might back out, after missing an elusive clean sweep last series.
However, the tireless Queensland powerhouse, known for his stints during the team’s unmatched eight successive series triumphs spanning 2006 to 2013, is ready for another round. Slater might even sign an extended contract including the 2025 series.
QRL boss Ben Ikin confirmed Slater’s intent to coach the Maroons further to League Initiative, stating, “We’ve established that Billy wants to persist with the coaching role”. The QRL will now undertake pragmatic discussions regarding the specifics of his role and overall implications.
The Fox League panel addressed the announcement on Friday evening. Parker expressed his delight on Fox League, acclaiming, “It’s a tremendous development for both Billy Slater and the QRL.”
Over the past couple of series, Slater has displayed exemplary passion and devotion to the jersey as well as the team’s identity and morale, and this has translated to two series wins as well.
Parker maintained, “It’s a fantastic fortune for Queensland, and it would be a bonus if he agrees to a multi-year contract.”. Furthermore, Parker noted Slater’s exceptional supporting contingent, and his continuous resolve to fulfil the coaching role as long as needed. It’s indeed a tremendous piece of news for all Queenslanders.
