Cronulla is currently experiencing a dilemma due to competition between Connor Tracey and Will Kennedy for the fullback position. Both the players have been listed in the 22-player squad for the upcoming elimination final against the Roosters on Saturday.
Injuries had been a significant concern for the team. There were prior dilemmas about needing to bring in Daniel Atkinson, who had spent only two minutes on the field this NRL season, when Tracey suffered a knee setback during their recent match against Canberra.
Following the victory over Canberra, Tracey exited PointsBet Stadium with his knee in a brace. Nevertheless, an examination conducted on Monday revealed no significant damage. “The scan news was fantastic. There isn’t any injury. I only jolted the knee which was why we decided to take precautions by icing it which seems like it has worked. Today it feels significantly better,” Tracey commented.
His inclusion in future matches isn’t certain despite the encouraging medical news. Another shock addition to Cronulla’s roster is Will Kennedy, who was demoted to the extended bench.
Although Kennedy hasn’t played since getting a severe hamstring injury in Round 22, a game that resulted in a 28-0 loss against Penrith, Nicho Hynes believes he would be a crucial addition to Cronulla’s increasingly competitive attack. “We are fortunate to have two exceptional fullbacks,” stated the halfback.
Hynes expressed his surprise upon discovering that Tracey was fit to play. He commented, “Connor’s performance has been commendable and he definitely deserves his spot. I can’t help but feel overwhelmed considering he was playing reserve grade at the start of the season and now has established himself in the NRL.”
After spending most of the season in NSW Cup, Tracey is gearing up to partake in his fourth finals game, his first in the fullback role. Reflecting on his journey, he remarked, “It’s quite remarkable how things have turned around and now I’m participating in an elimination final against the Roosters. Despite everything, I am treating this match like any other.”
