On Thursday, Mitchell shared a photograph of the Souths squad on social media, accompanying it with a caption restating his deep affection for the team and the club. He wrote, “Occasionally we may brawl, sometimes we might squabble, but there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind about the depth of my love for this club and my fellow players.”
In the past few days, Souths has been battling a Storm following the unexpected exit of assistant coach and club great Sam Burgess. This is rumoured to be the result of disagreement over how Mitchell and Cody Walker, another leading star, were being handled from within the club.
Mitchell himself has been subjected to criticism relating to his less than stellar performance in Souths‘ most recent defeat against Newcastle. This low point prompted a charge against him for dangerous contact, after he unleashed an elbow on his NSW team member, Tyson Frizell.
