The ongoing feud between rugby league legends Andrew and Matty Johns has encountered another bump in the road, with Andrew failing to appear on their weekly radio show together. The incident was allegedly caused by Matty praising the Queensland team and even going so far as to label player Billy Slater “almost the best coach in the game”. Andrew, a Blues assistant coach, commentator for Nine and one of rugby league‘s greatest players, was reportedly offended by his brother’s comments and refused to appear alongside him on their show.
Andrew’s love for New South Wales has been well-documented, and he was visibly crushed on the sidelines at Adelaide Oval after the Blues lost the first game of the series 26-18 against Queensland. After the game, he expressed his disappointment in the team’s poor performance. Despite this, Andrew refused to share the studio with his brother and dissect the game on Friday morning. Instead, former player Denan Kemp was recruited to fill in for the shift.
When Matty introduced Andrew at the start of the show, there was only silence. Matty jokingly said “Houston, we have a problem.” He went on to express his belief that Andrew’s absence was not related to the State of Origin game or Matty’s comments. Nevertheless, Matty commented on the fractured relationship between him and his brother and stated that they often have disagreements.
This latest rift between the Johns brothers began when Matty praised Queensland at the expense of New South Wales a few weeks ago. Andrew responded by calling him out for being too complimentary towards their rivals, and blowing “smoke up their backsides”. He expressed his frustration over Matty’s statements and stated that he couldn’t care less about Queensland, as they are “the enemy”.
This new friction between the brothers has caused much speculation. Fans are wondering if this latest event is just a temporary disagreement or if it signals a deeper rift between the two. Some are even questioning the future of their popular radio show. When contacted for comment, Andrew declined to respond.
