In a brief halftime interview during Wednesday’s State of Origin clash, Maroons legend Darren Lockyer and Queensland hooker Ben Hunt left fans in stitches. Though Lockyer is one of the greatest players to have ever graced the field, his distinctive gravelly voice is what people tend to remember him for nowadays.
However, when speaking to Hunt, the similarities between their voices were uncanny, with some fans mistaking the two for each other. Lockyer praised Hunt’s scrambling defence before wishing him good luck for the second half, and the Internet couldn’t get enough of their hilarious exchange.
This is not the first time Lockyer and Hunt’s voices have been compared. Auckland Councillor Shane Henderson joked that the pair had “more gravel than a rural driveway” in a tweet from last year. It’s believed Lockyer’s voice came as a result of a hit to the throat in 2004, while the reason behind Hunt’s huskiness remains unknown. Despite this, Hunt has still managed to play an impressive 302 first grade games, 15 Origins and 12 Tests for Australia.
Fans were quick to react to the interview, with many taking to social media to express their amusement. Some even suggested that the two could make great podcast hosts, while others took more comedic jabs at their voices. Regardless of the jokes made at their expense, both Lockyer and Hunt’s talent on and off the field is undeniable, and their interview is sure to be one of the highlights of this year’s State of Origin.
