Tonight, in a unique farewell celebration for Thomas Flegler, Brisbane Broncos‘ prop forward, supporters are being encouraged to “throw a banana”, marking his final regular season game. Flegler, a Tully farmer by trade, will lead the Broncos team fondly termed the “Baby Broncos” in this evening’s Round 27 battle with the Melbourne Storm at Suncorp Stadium.
The Broncos have the chance to earn the minor premiership but will need to perform without key players Payne Haas, Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, and Ezra Mam. A social media post, shared by numerous Broncos members, has urged fans to toss a banana in the eighth minute of the game.
The Instagram post read, “Broncos fans, on the eighth minute this weekend, we invite you to stand with us and launch a banana into the sky. It is a tribute to Tom Flegler, our banana farmer, for his remarkable service to the club.”
The Flegler family owns a 500ha banana farm in Tully, Far North Queensland, where Thomas often lends a hand during the off-season. This rallying call for a fruity show of support has been shared across social media platforms by Broncos players Mam, Walsh, and Keenan Palasia, gaining traction on Brisbane-centric fan pages.
Broncos‘ supporters have taken to social media platforms sharing messages like “need a banana for Thursday’s game,” and “getting Mario Kart vibes”. With heartfelt sentiments like “We will miss you Flegs. Thanks for all you did for the Broncos, good luck with the Dolphins,” also echoing on the platforms.
The Suncorp Stadium’s policy permits spectators to bring in home-prepared food and hermetically sealed plastic water bottles, according to their official website. However, food and beverages purchased in commercial containers, unless for patrons with dietary requirements not in banned containers like glass or cans, are not permitted. The stadium is equipped with a wide range of food and drink alternatives.
