Mal Meninga has expressed his confidence that the relentless Brisbane Broncos are primed for the Grand Final, suggesting that they might become the club’s most successful squad across all regular seasons.
In the club’s 35 years, no Broncos team has managed to rack up 19 victories in one regular season. However, with just three more wins against the Eels, Raiders, and Storm, Kevin Walters‘ squad will rewrite the record books.
The previous record held by the Broncos, tallying 18 wins, has been achieved by teams in 1992, 1998, 2000, and 2011.
24 matches comprise this year’s competition and Australian national coach Meninga is backing the Broncos for a serious title shot, particularly following their impressive 30-14 win over the Cowboys in Townsville.
“The Broncos top my list,’’ Meninga revealed to Fox Sports, “They’re primed to make their move for the Grand Final this year. Both their back five and forwards are impeccable, there’s a unique spark in this team.’’
A significant trend seen from the Broncos teams who’ve achieved 18 victories is that three of them – the squads from 1992, 1998, and 2000 – went onto claim the title.
The temperate winter added to their momentum, greatly contributing to their eventual glory.
For any title chase, a healthy team list is crucial. As the Broncos gear up for their Friday match against Parramatta, they’re spoilt for choice.
Veteran halfback Cooper Cronk praised the Broncos after their victory against the Cowboys, “Their strength, athleticism, and confidence is apparent,’’ he shared on Fox, “Their win, even in the absence of Adam Reynolds, was a powerful statement.”
While Penrith is still the favourite to win their third consecutive premiership, league Legend Andrew Johns firmly believes a well-fired Brisbane can challenge them.
Brisbane proved their mettle with a hard-fought 13-12 win against the Panthers in Penrith in round one, highlighting an early hint that the disappointment of missing last year’s finals has greatly invigorated the Broncos.
